A good and timely word at church today. I’m so thankful for a church that stands firm on scripture—the Bible—and to be part of a body of believers that lives out the gospel.
Today’s message was about checking our hearts. What is our motivation? Pleasing God or looking good on the outside? If our motivation isn’t to please God, our service will be empty, it won’t satisfy. It won’t fill the hole in our hearts, and it won’t make us whole. We cannot be whole without God’s spirit and his word.
I’ve seen so much ugliness this past week. So much blaming and self-righteousness. The truth is none of us are righteous. We need the perfect righteousness that is only found in Jesus. We need God’s Spirit within us to change us – we can’t do it on our own.
If you’re like the many who came to church today, starving for truth, I implore you to pray and seek God. The book of Jeremiah says, “you will seek me and find me when you seek me with ALL your heart.” Have you sought truth from the one who created everything with true humility? Or are you holding onto “your own truth?” Have you truly submitted to God’s authority and not your own? Have you given him ALL your heart?
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29: 11-13
God is waiting for you to turn your heart to him. He is bigger than everything you’re holding onto. But he does not force anyone to follow him. He is good and he is patient. But he will not wait forever.
We cannot continue in our faith without the Word of God. The Bible is God’s love story and his instruction manual for living. If you love God, then you must love his word.
If you claim to be a Christian, do you seek God in his word every day? Or are you just getting by on your own strength, just barely holding on, filling your mind and heart with the messages and worries of this world. I’ve been there and have struggled too. It takes diligence, persistence, and sacrifice. This world needs more rooted and faithful believers. This world needs Jesus. No Jesus, no peace. Know Jesus, know peace.
